Best Treatment for Vent Gleet and Sour Crop

So, we lost her. She made the decision for you. I'm so sorry. The crop surgery would have been one final effort, but realistically, it was just a shot in the dark.

If you were to open her abdominal cavity, it's possible you'd find cancer tumors. When a crop fails to respond to all the treatments you toss at it, the obstruction is often cancer.

Thank you. I am so grateful for you and your help. I'd be lost (and probably no longer keeping chickens or ducks) if it wasn't for a few of you on here.
I truly believe that I was way off in my thinking on her issues a year ago. It was probably fluid build up or something like that associated with cancer or reproductive disorders.
Darla gave us almost 2 years of joy so I'm grateful for her. She was a wonderful hen, along with her flockmates. I couldn't ask for better examples for my other hens and pullets to follow. I can't think of anything that disappointed me about her or her flockmates. I guess they're the reason I have so many now! They're just that enjoyable. Hopefully her flockmates will be OK. Her best friend is a Barred Rock and she's still sitting in the run, I'm guessing waiting for Darla. I'll put her inside now and keep an eye on them. Their head hen, "Fashion" a SLWyandotte, would just sit with Darla the past few days. I'd find them cuddled up in a corner. Oftentimes "Sue" (BR bestie) would be cuddled up on the other side of Darla. People that don't have chickens really don't know what they're missing, do they?
AS usual I'm rambling. I apologize for that. All this chat has helped me feel a little better. Thank you for everything!!!

Oh no, I'm so so sorry, Heather. :hugs
You gave her every chance to get well, she just couldn't. Know that you did the absolute best you could.
Rest in peace, beautiful Darla.
Thank you @MGG . I appreciate you too. Honestly, I'd be lost without a few of you. I would have done whatever I could to make her feel better.

Rambling soothes grief. Ramble on! We are here to receive your rambles.

We do get attached to our chickens, and when we bond closely with one, it can hurt as much as to lose a human friend. But this is the way of love and attachment. To protect ourselves from loss, we would never know joy.

:hugs Heather I'm sorry to hear about Darla.

You are right, a lot of people don't know what they are missing.
I know chickens can be mean to one another, but some of them do form bonds. I've seen it and I'm glad you were able to see it between Darla, Sue and Fashion.

You can ramble/chat all you want. I'll listen. ❤️

Thank you so much for everything. I sure miss my sweet and whimsical Darla but thanks to you, I feel like I tried everything in my power to help her. I've read so many posts here and follow most of them in this thread but I just don't do well whenever it comes to my own. I'm willing to do whatever I can but the confidence in forming a plan just fades away. Either way, I still have a LOT to learn. I am so grateful for your knowledge and kindness. You ladies have always been there and that really means so much. With Darla's passing, I still learned a lot. You ladies are the best and I mean that from the bottom of my heart. I have so much respect and appreciation for you. Thanks again for everything.

I know that Darla was a chicken but whenever I did her oil and massage in the middle of the night, I honestly believe that she felt loved or cared for or something like that. It's difficult to not put human emotions into a beloved pet, but she'd take her beak and almost like she was trying to pull me closer to her. That warmed my heart so much. (maybe it was just relaxing for her but either way I believe she enjoyed something about those interactions whether it was the closeness, the massage, the conversation, or the petting, I'm happy that she enjoyed it)
