@WVForestGirl, do you have a picture of the Horizontal set up you have? and what brand heater do you use. with the Vertical one I use, all the chicks picked it up right away the first day they arrived. I am looking to prepare for winter. is there not an adequate way to heat them to prevent freezing in the winter. our northwest winters are impossible to predict, some times there are long freezing spells, sometimes hardly any at all but I have to prepare for whatever comes.
