Best way to get a variety of day old chicks?

I ordered 5 from My Pet Chicken and then 7. Both groups had just one chick of each breed. The shipping is expensive. But for those of us limited by City Ordinance what are ya gonna do. I would suggest finding a few BYCers in your area and seeing if they want to split an order of chicks with you. I seem to remember seeing a lot of people from Oregon here.

I just ordered from McMurray (didn't know there were other options until AFTER ordering...lol - so they get the first chance) and although there is the 25 chick minimum, I got a few of this type and a few of that to make up the 25.
I have the following coming:

2 Partridge Rock hens
4 Speckled Sussex hens and 1 roo
2 Red Star hens
2 RIR hens
4 Barred Rock hens and 1 roo
2 Light Brahma hens and 1 roo
2 White Orpingtons
2 Delawares
2 Buff Orpingtons

and they throw in a "free rare exotic chick" - having never ordered from them (or anyone else for that matter) I have NO IDEA what this chick will be--hoping they identify on the shipping label.. I already figure it will be a little roo

I liked the ability to order a variety but understand that you will still pay the 1-10 price for each breed you get. Would be nice to get the 25 chick price but I wanted the variety

Mine are due to come Feb. 7thish.. will be waiting with eager anticipation!! and of course will post pictures when I learn how.

I did it.. that is a picture of my hens who prefer getting OUT via slipping under the gate of the protected front yard to dig around in the overgrown flower bed... the darker one tangled with a dog and lost..

I figured Chill..how was your order from them?

I am steadily studying and copying pictures of chicks so I might at least have an idea of "who" is who when they arrive.. but figure that they will probably just be "the baby chicks" for awhile until they start to feather out and are more distinguishable. I can see DH and I now -- holding up pictures and saying "that one looks like a RIR.. no wait.. I think it is a Red Star!"

The fun of the first order!

Of course I now have eggs in the incubator.. so I'll be young chick crazy in no time!

I was very happy with my order of 12 chicks from My Pet Chicken. All were alive and healthy when they arrived, and most of them are now laying eggs for me. I liked being able to specify pullets. I've since ventured into the hatching experience, and it's sad when you have to get rid of the excess roos, especially when they're rare breeds (we gave them to a friend who has a LOT of chickens, so they didn't get butchered). I would definitely order from MPC again, and am thinking about adding several more brown egg layers to my flock.
