My “pullet” speckled sussex from the feed store turned out to be a rooster. Figures as it was my favorite chick of the bunch. I can’t have roosters where I live so I need to rehome him but don’t want him going onto someone’s plate or just let loose out into a field to eat bugs until a predator eats him up.

I’m going to put up an ad in the local online classifieds and FB chicken groups and want to weed out inquiries like mentioned above. I figured I‘ll list him for a cheap price (but not free) and mention I’ll only sell to someone looking to add him to their flock.

Any other suggestions to help this handsome guy find a good home? I realize that once I sell him it’s not longer my choice what happens but while he’s in my care I’m still going to try to provide a good life for him to the best of my ability.

I cant keep roosters where I live ether. That is why I only purchase known hens, (at point where easily identified since quite grown) or sexlink chicks.
I know you want to place your rooster into a home to be a living chicken. :hugs
The reality of life, and hatching chickens is,,,,,,, only about 50% of chicks turn out to be hens. The remainder are the less desired, and do end up in the food chain.
Another sad reality is what hatcheries do to all their extra males at day 1 hatch. I will just skip those details. If you want a positive outlook, on a rooster raised to maturity, and have a good life, with only one bad moment, consider the fact that he will provide nutrition to a human being. :)
I only keep my chickens as pets, but do eat the eggs. I let my chickens live out their life to end. My oldest hen lived 13 years.
I know it is difficult to re-home a rooster, but I do wish you sincere success.
WISHING YOU BEST,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,and:welcome

Good luck. Rehoming a rooster is tough, especially with a price tag. If I may suggest, post your ads and leave it blank for cost? Maybe you will talk to someone who will give him an amazing home and you will want to give him to them for the sake of that. That’s was my experience. I couldn’t ask money when the right person took one of our roosters. I was just happy for him.
Other than that, planning gets tough. What to do if nobody takes it. I plan on looking for a local place that will process them for meat. It’s not easy when you raise them, that’s for sure.
Hope you find someone who will take him. Speckled Sussex is a nice breed.

Thanks guys. I am aware that roosters are hard to place and what hatcheries do with most of the male chicks. And of course I would give this guy away for free to a good home but the problem with chickens (and pets) is it usually attracts people whom I'm trying to avoid selling to. Those who are looking for a free meal (no judgement there though, chickens are food) or just want to throw them out in a field to eat bugs but have no intention of housing, feeding or protecting them so want free birds they can continually as predators pick them off. My experience tells me, if you are unwilling to pay $5 for a chicken then you probably don't intend to raise it, lol!
