Best winter feed for geese

Sunflower seeds are so good for the birds and what ever the bird it is always the first picked out of the food bowl.

Those sound like great suggestions. I'll definitely keep the planting in mind in the spring. Giant sunflowers should be a great crop--if I can keep the horses and goats away.

Gee Banter what a good idea...but question...the Chick-a-dees always seem to get my sunflowers seeds that i grow.
How do you protect yours until you harvest them?

I love It!! Mine are leary of the ramp to the coop when it is wet. They have to be encouraged to go in even though the ramp has grips for them so they don't slip. I can see myself in your position this winter!

Oh strange! Of course snow is fairly rare here in NC and the ducks and geese would go wild when I let them out in the snow. I think the ducks mistook snowflakes for insects and would jump quite high to catch the flakes when they came drifting down. the geese didn't mind digging through the 2-3 inches to get to the greens underneath. They hated it when the wet snow would get on the top of their feet and they would stop to shake it off every step.
One morning we had about 5 inches of snow with 1/4 inch of frozen rain on the top, I crunched throught it since everything was closed,(rebels don't know how to drive on ice) when I let them out they came in a rush with the big old gander in the lead since he wanted first shot at the pool as always. he was just about to fall on his face but flapped his wings and took off like a iceboat across the yard, goosy see goosy do, and the whole gaggle went shooting across the yard straight toward a board horse fence. I was sure I would have some hurt birds but two managed to clear the fence and the rest bounced off the big tough gander. I had to go get the two that cleared the fence and lead them through the gate back to the yard. By the time I got back the geese had the iceskating figured out and were zipping all over the place and the ducks were in the pools. I left them out all day and went out to feed them early since I knew all that activity and no greens they would be hungry. No geese were injured but a few ducks that normally could out run the geese were missing some tail feathers!

I guess I'm lucky-they get left alone except occasionally a deer will eat the whole head.
