I know you're not supposed to advertise anything on here but I have a cause I'm trying help out. Plus I've been an active member for ever so I hope I can have this one favor

Betta fish are one of the pets in the world that people think are disposable. I am trying to raise awareness that they are living creatures along with encouraging people to not keep them in tiny fish bowls. We aren't asking for anything more than a little awareness, some facebook likes, and maybe a guestbook comment. Thank you everyone so much! I appreciate it!

My son always wants to 'save' the bettas we see at Walmart...a store like that shouldn't be allowed to sell any living creature.

ETA: Stupid question alert: I have a shubunkin goldfish who will (hopefully) be moved outside soon to a small pond. I also have 1 betta in a 'double betta' tank. I know now that the tank is too small for the betta and would like to put him in with the goldfish? The goldfish is easily 3 times bigger than the betta, way too big for it's tank (hence the reason for the move). I'm not sure when I'll be able to get the goldfish pond done and don't want to wait forever to move the betta. Do you think it would be okay to put them together?

My betta lives in a 20 gallon aquarium.
Edited to add: I've been called cruel for keeping him in a 20 gallon aquarium, because people think they like to live in those tiny little glasses of water.

We bought a male and female betta for our 55 gal tank together. Yes, together along with other assortment of fishes. The male betta does not bother anyone, flirts with the female but no mating going on. He is fairly young and small. We just lost the female betta and nearly lost this male from the same thing, by the filter tube that sucks water in (along with five other fishes we lost too) until hubby found a black foam sleeve for the tube and no more losses. So in due time, we will find a female betta for him or eye candy for the tank. People say that do not put the pair together however one gal at Petsmart told us she had a pair in a large acquiruim and did fine. So did ours. Lack of room is what causes problems.

Don't buy bettas from petstores! That is supporting cruelty and you are just buying mutts! Buy from breeders, and remember when buying bettas are a serious commitment. I have two males about 4 years old. They are elderly for sure ! I am going to buy a pure white pair from a breeder soon , I cant wait to breed them!

I've always kept my bettas in my community tank. My last betta was a female that made it 4 years

I bred bettas for a long time, as did my sister and parents. A healthy betta from a breeder can last up to 6 years, never super stressed, never crammed into tiny cups, never fed growth hormones. Because male bettas don't fully develop those lovely long fins till 9-12 months. And commercialism is all about the profit, so they don't care if the growth hormones speed up the life cycle to as short as 1.5 years.


I seriously miss my bettas. I stopped breeding when dh got the job where he works now, when we move I am going to have another as just a pet. And guess what he will be going into.... a nice 29 gallon with some corys and that's it lol.
