Big Island Hawaii - Planning to raise chickens for both eggs and meat... any tips for a newbie?

Hi and welcome to BYC from northern Michigan :D

Local heath regulations vary, so sourland's advice is good. Check in the Where am I - Where are you section for a Hawaii thread, for help on raising chickens in that climate.

Hey, I live in Keaau over on the other side of the island. I'm still trying to find out the answer myself.

All meat in Hawaii is ONLY USDA inspected. They turned over all inspection to the USDA a while back. I found some document at the state of hawaii webpage and also on the USDA webpage.

The USDA doesn't require inspection of rabbit meat, they leave that up to local states to decide that.

So as far as I can tell, in the state of Hawaii we MIGHT be able to raise, butcher, and sell rabbit meat without inspection. But I don't know if that includes to places that serve food. I am looking into selling rabbits to local eateries as well as for myself.

If you wanna chat about raising rabbits or chickens or goats for that matter shoot me a pm!
