Big problem with my newly purchased mallard ducks.

Excuse me if this is controversial BUT....if you are handy with a gun shoot the raccoons

Simple enough...or hire someone to come and trap them for you. Any animal that goes after my ducks is gone.....call me an animal abuser but we just "got rid of" a feral cat whom was trying to kill our chickens and ducks....

And I read through everything here...and saw you "knock" the previous owners for using a kiddie pool for their ducks.....I hope you realize about 90% of the people on here use kiddie pools....not EVERYBODY can afford to put in a pond for their ducks

me included, and my ducks are very happy with what they have....a rundown shed, fenced in area and a kiddie pool....there's my 2 cents

Miss Lydia, I put up some pictures for you to view. Thanks for the insulation comment . I will not put insulation then. May be it will be over kill but since my pen is with the coop and everything is hardware cloth, I thought I will put some in for insulation. Do you think these ducks and chicken will pick on it and be harmed
If they can get to it they will most likely try to eat it, especially the chickens. What part of the country are you in? if up north where it gets extremely cold then I'd say go for it, if down south then I'd say it may help keep the coop cooler in the summer but if you put windows and vents to let heat out at roof line it would probably be over kill. still your choice.

sounds to me like these mallards arnt very use to people if you have to chase them. is say rehome them and buy some hatching eggs and start from scratch. i hatched my ducks and i literally point to their cage and the hop in. even from afar i just tell them in and they go. i have rouens which you could consider. not only cant the fly away but because of their larger size they seem to take care of themselves better. they look just like mallards too. and much easier to train. my two chase off any animal including cats and dogs and many children when they get too crowded. I live in the UK and i have 2 beautiful rouen ducks which are almost a year old (1 year old on July 27th). i have some videos online of them if anyone is interested. there are alot of videos of pet ducks but im certian i have something many havent seen. ive got some clips of them on the bus and train. please take a look and leave a comment :D ENJOY

Petes Mom I always envied others who had a beautiful pond for their ducks and geese, but after being here for many years and reading about the heart ache that comes with having a pond and losing their ducks and ducklings to snapping turtles, well I am very happy to have kiddie pools and half a stock tank for my flock. I don't know if you can ever get rid of snappers once they know theres water close, seems it would be a constant threat and I'd just as soon not have to deal with it. My ducks even love the cement mixing tub I have on the patio for them to play in. I call it their soaking tub. I would be very concerned about raccoons coming around during daylight hours, we had a rabies epidemic some years ago that hit the raccoon pop. the hardest and even know if we see a raccoon in the day time think rabies. I deff think she needs to get a professional to take care of that problem.

We used to have a snapping turtle problem. The one day my dad caught one sun bathing on the rocks at 6am, flew down with his truck and grabbed it. Another was in the sandy area (ready to lay eggs (Noooo!!!!!) and we got her out of there, and we got a baby one that was about 3 inches big in a puddle. And havent had any sightings of any since then

. We took them to a lake across town. But if needed you an bait a hook with a tough line and empty milk jugs to the other end to catch them. I personally dont like snappers, even the little baby one I picked up with a shovel once I got it to the house my dad kept putting his finger infornt its face trying to provoke it and nothing! I dont know why he would do that but he was amused
