I was out in my garage (aka brooder room) changing out the stinky bedding in my duckling brooder box. It was so stinky, I didn't smell smoke until my son in the house (attached) said he smelled it. So I started looking outside, and it smelled worse out there than in the house, and kept on looking. I went back to the duck box, they were out in the yard in my dog's old whelping box enjoying the balmy day and some water to splash in...I turned around and saw the cardboard box that my youngest chicks and keets are brooding in and about freaked! The corner was smoking and charred! Lo and behold, the heat lamp had slipped (the adjusting rolly ball thing was so loose!) and it was resting on the screen that I cover the box with and burning the cardboard! i caught it just in time-no flames yet! But my precious babies were down 2 feet lower in that box! Aghhh! I would've died. My family couldn't believe that I couldn't smell it in there. But I was smelling something way strong right in front of me...and I don't have a great sense of smell! So we were very lucky!
Thank you God!

Good thing you caught it in time!!!

Good lesson for the rest of us, don't use a cardboard box!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I thought of that with my first hatch. I was afraid that the lamp could possibly slip so I changed my cardboard brooder box to a metal water trough.

So glad you caught it in time!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Enjoy your babies

wish I had a metal water trough...I've found metal pasture gates, a few galvanized metal tubs (small ones), but not big troughs...any clues about how to locate one?

thanks! Do you know about how much $ a nice big one costs?
