Big shipment of free pallets!

I think I'm just going to use the circular saw and chop off the pieces without nails. Easier and cheapest way since I don't have to buy/rent tools.

i'm in the process of collecting scrap wood to make a coop, i haven;t gotten a hold of any pallets, but i have taken apart some frames. I've just been using a hammer and prying 1 seam at a time to loosen the board and when i get the last seam loosened i go back to the first and pry like an over bearing mother in law. Eventually you can just yank the board off and deal with the nails later. If get some nails that won't budge i just knock the pointy end of the nail into some concrete till the head pops out of the board a little. good luck, takes a lot of work, but i am also in the broke boat so every board counts.

I'm collecting pallets as I type. I'm just going to use mine 'as is' for the frame of the coop. Then I'm going to cover with siding (of some kind - haven't figured that part out yet). Maybe pull off a few boards to fill in the "gaps" and then nail on battans to cover the smaller gaps????

Yeah I was thinking about putting siding on it. But I don't think my parents will fork over some more money for siding. Unless it's cheap? I plan on building a 4x4x4 coop. I.E. I'd need a good 64 sq ft of siding.

Just a note about the recip saw, I have a $19 one from from Harbour freight, its not super powerful but does the job and its on its fourth year running. They still put em on sale for around 20 bucks all the time. Our local rental is $12 day!
You could use the pallets as is, and then take apart some and cover the gaps, like they used to build houses with dimensional lumber, I think the same as teach1 is talking about

Ok, I've weighed my options and came to a decision. I am just going to use my Uncles Saw and start cutting. Although the reciprocating saw is cheap, I WOULD buy it, but I don't think my mother would appreciate it. Also, I'm going to scratch the panel idea too.

And for the studs... I have about 3 stacks of pallets that are about 6ft tall each. I'm sure I have more than enough wood for a 4x4 coop

Although, if it doesn't look good; I'll spring for the saw and use the excuse that I'm starting work in the fall

This is what I did with my free pallets.... It started as this:

I have @$150 in this coop so far NOT including the paint..... I opted for more expensive paint to help protect the OSB I used to cover the pallets. The 1/2" OSB I used to cover the pallets cost $5.67 per 4' x 8' sheet. The shingles were left overs, as was some of the dimensional lumber. I'm hoping to get this thing finished this weekend so we can get our girls and gent in it soon.
