Big silkie

I should weigh my silkie girl, she's probably at least 3 lbs because she's pet quality.

As for getting meat cut thin, toss it in the freezer for 30-60 minutes and then try cutting it partially frozen with a sharp knife. If it's slightly icy on the inside, you can get meat slices as thin as sandwich meat, but raw!

Want to try something hot though compared to wasabi, try those little thai red chillies. The habanero sure takes the cake for hot, that's hot without flavor as far as I'm concerned!

I'll venture to guess at a mature weight of 7lbs or so, sound like they are the single breasted brown feathered yellow skinned birds you can find at the Asian markets with with head and feet on. When you order a dish of "free range chicken" you'll usually get a single breasted bird with more texture to it's more scarce meat vs the double breasted mushy standard cornish x that is commercially raised.

I never thought about doing that. I bet it is easier to cut to that way. See, you are a good teacher

That must be the little red pepper that my dad ate! I thought I was going to have to call 911 for him. They had them at a fruit stand. He told that girl that he eats hot stuff all the time. She said try one of those little red peppers then, you should like those. That little pepper, taught him a lesson, that's for sure!

Once again, I laughed until I cried. His face looked like a bright red tomatoe with tears streaming down his face.

I looked for about an hour last night and couldn't find anything. I know the website is out there, I just can't find it. Maybe, they went ouf of business.

I have one Silkie hen that is pretty stocky built. She is out of a G.M. hen.

i have a question for everyone who is looking for 'big silkies' If i had a way to get some standard silkies, would there be a market for hatching eggs and breeder pairs/trios?? my huge silkie, Evyle is about 10lbs..

oh and how much would be a fair price for hatching eggs/ and breeding pairs? just out of curiosity of course

wow! sign me up if you're breeding 10lb silkies! I have black skinned crosses that can reach up to 10lbs, but they're mostly orientals and the meat is tough! btw, I can't remember what hatchery claimed to sell "black chickens for the asian market" but I did fall for it before and called them and was sadly disppointed when I was told that only the feathers were black, not the skin (some asians dont' like chickens with light feathers). I think it was Nolls... definitely a hatchery in PA.

also... the whole chicken in the pot thingie is complicated. Basically you're supposed to eat the part of the chicken that is ailing on your body:/

I had no idea that silkies were bred for meat. I thought they were just the cute muppets of the chicken world. Are there specific recipes for their darker meat? Does it taste that different?

some people think they taste different. I had a customer who said that she was allergic to all chicken meat except black skinned chickens

I can't eat it myself, the color reminds me of bats
