So our 5 month chicken laid the most amazing egg have ever seen here's a photo tell me what you think. In normal egg weighs 2 oz this a ways 5.2 oz / 147g
It happens with new layers sometimes til they get the kinks worked out. . We have one lady that still is doin this sometimes when she skips a day of layin. Ours have been layin since mid summer.
I bet it has 2-4 yolks in there. As sfgwife said, it is most common (but not restricted to) new layers. Sudden changes in daylight can also result is abnormal egg sizes (or other defects).
Probably a double yoker... that poor baby! I haven't gotten any yet, but if I find one that big, I'll probably feel like I should give that girl a massage and spa day!
The biggest egg I've ever seen came from the hen shown in my avatar. I wish I had weighed the thing but it was 3 1/2" in length!! It was so huge I saved it for awhile and showed it to people and their eyes would get big and their jaw would drop and then they would ask..."Is that hen still alive after laying that?!!!" She lays lots of "mega" eggs but that one was simply massive and holds the record in my flock. And yes, it was a double yolker! Often her eggs are so big I can't close the lid of the egg carton.
Congrats on your huge egg! They are amazing to see and even more fun to crack open!
