I started my flock around 12 weeks ago, with a gift of 9 bantams from a kindly soul.

About two weeks later, I bought several Australorps, Orpingtons and Potch Koekoeks at 4 weeks of age, which I kept indoors under lights until three weeks ago, when I added them to the run.

I have read scores of threads on how to introduce newcomers to a flock, and everyone has a different slant, so I used the age-old one of simply adding them all (6) at once.

This caused a small ruckus, but despite their - now - larger size, the newcomers were soon put in place by a cocky little bantam, and all seemed fine.

However....

(There's always a 'however' in these stories, no?!)

...the newcomers do not mix with the rest of the flock at all, (in a run that's 7' x 30') and actually sleep outside the coop in the rain!

They do use an overhang, and are totally secure from predators, but do not go into the dry area of the coop at night, despite the doorway being open. We're heading to Winter now, and I'm concerned...

They will probably stay as a group for some time. Just make sure the bantams are not keeping the new birds away from the food & water or picking on them and it should be fine. you may need to go in the run & put the birds into the coop for a few days so they understand that's where they should be at night.
Good luck with them!

I agree on putting them on the roost every night until they get the picture. You do have enough space in the coop and enough roosting space, right?

Yeah,

I believe there is enough space but the bantams all clamber together in two tomato boxes anyway, and take up very little room.

For some reason, they ignore the roosting branches I have cleverly placed in strategic spots.

The newcomers are often disturbed by a security light above their run that comes on when I walk past, and instead of just waiting it out, the rise and seem to want food.

I have placed a second food server in the run, but am away from home a lot at the moment, so cannot determine if they are being given a chance to feed. Certainly at night the feeder is right next to them and the 'oldies' are in the coop.

Regarding putting them in at night, there is no 'in' as the sleeping area has no door, and leads onto the run...
