Neat! Thanks so much! Loki likes pumpkin, but that will have to wait until October. I remember someone telling me that their calls stopped laying at around this point in the summer. I'll miss the yummy baked goods from her eggs, but the poor baby needs a break from laying! It's insanely hot and humid here, and I think and the drake are already starting their end of summer molt, so hopefully she won't be laying AND molting.Found it! In “Duck Eggs Daily”, by Lisa Steele, it says the orange color comes “from xyanthophyll, a carotenoid found in alfalfa, basil, carrots, corn, marigolds, pumpkins and other food. The more of these foods a duck eats, the more orange their bills and feet will turn. Xanthophyll is also what colors egg yolks.” Great book btw.
It seems kind of early to stop laying, but I don’t have Calls. My drake seems to molt a lot more than my girls. But, my girls have their best molts in the spring if they took the winter off from laying. Missing those eggs only makes them taste better when they come back!Neat! Thanks so much!
