Biodiverse Polyculture (USDA 8a Zone Pasture) - sounds better than "My Acres of Weeds"

Are you looking only at "rental" places? Or also at the county extension office or conservation office? Neither rent many things but fertilizer spreaders are a common thing they do have. States around here do anyway. Many people don't know this option because of how few things they rent out.

Here, they may not be immediately available but we can usually reserve a time well in advance. And sometimes reserve a time not far ahead.

The cost is very nominal - I almost think no cost but I'm not sure. I looked it up the year before last but didn't do it. I planted 5 acres of oats by hand (think walking across the field endless times with a pail, tossing seed out in a swinging motion) then realized I had the extension office option.

Unless your counties are a lot bigger than ours, it should be a lot closer than an hour and a quarter away.

Having just taken the whole thing apart and reassembled, the "right" side is the side on your right if you lay the bucket down such that the tow arm would be pointing into your chest.

That is, the :right front: if front is where the car/tractor/atv goes.

NOT the right side if you are looking at the label!

150# of starter fertilizer (10-14-10 + sulphur), 800# of pelletized lime. 2 Acres broken with the teeth on the box blade to mix things up some. Will run the drag tomorrow to push the dirt back in the channels and level things a bit. Have near freezing temps again in two weeks, and a better than even chance of rain essentially every other day until then.

After that, can seed and cross fingers for a wet March...

Feels *(and looks)* like starting over. But there will be some clover showing (and other, less desired, greenery) as soon as most of the loose dirt is back in the trenches. Birds are out scratching in it now. Goats have given up and headed for the woods.

Wow! I don't know how I overlooked this thread all this time, but I'm grateful I found it now. I just read the entire thing. Fascinating stuff @U_Stormcrow! I've learned so much.
We live in zone 9 and have a crappy yard with some scrub trees and the open areas the dog does a fine job of tearing it up. This is all sandy soil, no clay and very difficult to grow anything in. When I look around and see all the "weeds" I don't think I'll ever pull another one from the flower bed again as I've recognized some of them in your posts. I'm determined to turn this yard into a chicken paradise with the help of your knowledge. Thank you for taking the time to post all the pictures. It looks like you have a lovely farm.
We are first time chicken owners this past year so we are novices all the way around. Gardening needs to be our priority for sure and I'll be watching here for updates on your progress.
Yes, here's to hoping we have a very wet March. We are extremely dry here - you get MUCH more rain up there than we do here. We are usually in severe drought most of the summer.
On Yarrow - none of the nurseries around here can even get it. Interesting how just a few hours distance a plant can be unavailable to almost a nuisance. Nature is fascinating.
