Birchen Marans Thread

Pics
I am going to work on them soon.  I have a BLUE pullet and I am going to put her with my Birchen roo.  I know where she came from and I know she is BLUE and not copper.  Maybe next year I will have a nice flock of them.
That's good to know - if the blue hens I hope to get turn out to have copper in them after breeding, I'll probably be contacting you. :)

Here is my chick I think might be my only Birchen. I had 4, 3 coppersand 1 Birchen. All had a bit of light on their chest. Only this one got whiter and the rest, all of the white is gone. The only problem is this chick hasn't grown since it was two weeks. It's feet are cool and it's always under the heat lamp. It's 3 months. Look how tiny. She is usually awake. I washed her feet in warm water and she got sleepy.

Sad to say, I had a Black Copper Marans that was like this...about 4 months old he died...the Vet think it was some development issue....I cut him open and his heart was super tiny, tiny!

I am affraid something like that might happen. I had a silkie like this too but 2 weeks ago, poof, see is the size of the rest. I don't how she could grow so much in 2 weeks. This time I'm not so sure. This ones wings are very large for her body. I hope she'll start to grow without the others in there. She is such a sweetie.

Is this a Blue Birchen Marans rooster?

I have two blue birchen pullets......I think. They came from this rooster and hen. I also have a black pullet from the same cross who appears to be getting some silver on her hackles, as well as 3 splash roosters and a splash pullet that is laying.

The blue pullets are solid blue with silver/white on the hackles. I think that makes them birchen, doesn't it?

I am sorry to sound so stupid about them, but I found a lady with them and wanted to inject blue into my coppers, and I thought the splash roosters were from Blue Copper Marans. I didn't know they were not Coppers till I got there....bought them anyways.

Now I have to figure out what to do with them. The lady with this rooster is going to sell the pair along with a splash pullet from these two, I think. I guess I could buy them if she decides to sell.

Thanks very much. One more question....would it be worthwhile to be kept as a breeder?
Tess,

I have no clue.....I guess it depends if you are trying to breed toward the standard of perfection(SOP)......I am sure there is someone who can answer that better than I can. I went to a lady's house thinking I was getting splash coppers marans roosters for injection blue into my black coppers, and ended with 3 splash rooster, 2 blue birchen pullets, a splash pullet, and a (black)birchen pullet.

I probably have more to learn than anybody around here about birchens. I do like their coloring, though. Who knows what I would end up breeding any of them to my black coppers???

My name is Diane....not Tess......Tess was the name of my Border Collie.

I am looking for some Birchen...I have two pullets and one has the gold fleck in her hackles. The other one is still younger and I can't tell about the coloring.

Diane
