how would you introduce birchen to a breed:/

That would depend on what other features you want to add or avoid.
Rose comb?
Single comb - yes, no
Bantam or not?
Drop wing or not?
Short back or long?

Smooth feather or sizzle or silkie? WEEEEEEE....

You can add birchen from many breeds but you get to tailor your choices, if you're smart, to breeds that cause the fewest other problems.

For instance, I'm working a line of pet sizzles, pet because the variety I want to work on isn't recognized - I want birchen Sizzles. I have what may be a birchen male. To go on I want birchen - preferably gold birchen, Sizzles are bantams, so I'm getting (over sized) brown red and lemon blue seramas - which will mess up my already messed up combs but will provide color without size problems. It will also throw drop wings I'll have to sort out and throw tail set to the wind. But bantams don't eat much. LOL. Then back to silkies and sizzles with the progeny.... etc.

So whatcha DOIN?????

Be a LOT easier if you even knew whether you wanted bantams, standards, layers, meat birds, duals or colored egg layers...

Smallish bird and dark brown eggs? Single comb? Okay some folks are working up bantam marans. Not APA yet and only the BCs will be soon but not a bad ground floor breed, still being worked up.

I know depending on the color some marans legs are slate. Marans carry birchen.

And since the breed is only now being accepted - you've got a LOT of room to establish a new color or work on Black Coppers - aka Gold Birchen, bantam marans. Or Blue Bantam marans or Blue Birchen bantam marans.

Why don't you just breed scrawny Birchen Marans. It would be alot easier. Do the opposite of me. Instead of breeding my biggest Roo, just breed back to the scrawniest Roo. After a generation or two of scrawny breedings you will have just what you want. A smaller Birchen that lays dark eggs. That would be a much quicker and more predictable breeding plan.

Speaking of birchen- I hatched some of my birchen jap X black cochin chicks. I was sure they'd be solid black. They are about 7 weeks now- the birchen pattern is showing through. They're really cute- they look like little birchen japs with boots on.
