ok my hens are covered in bugs... tiny red ones, black ones.

I did the Flea and Tick dip wash for my birds and then I will cover everything in wood ash. Here's my friend helping me wash Goldie, a Golden Wyandotte.

I''ve never seen someone dip a chicken before :)
I quicker way to deal with mites would be to use avian ivomectin drop on. You merely need to catch a chicken and put 2 or 3 drops on the back of it's neck and then when the mites go to bite them they will be poisoned and die. However you will need to do the treatment again after 2 weeks, just to make sure they are all dead. I have found that this is the quickest and most practical way of dealing with mites and worms :)

thanks for the tip on the ivomectin. I have been trying to stay as "organic" and natural as possible.

This is the first time I have actually dipped my chickens in a chemical bath as the bugs were getting out of control. Does the ivomectin treat those tiny jumping bugs or is it just the mites (I believe these are the bugs that are bigger that are visible to the eye and can usually be found near the vent area?). Also how long do you have to not eat the eggs after you drop the ivomectin?

Ivomectin will kill everything that feeds on the chicken including all mites, worms and any other little critter that's biting your chicken. I don't actually know how long you're meant to wait before eating the chicken's eggs again, or if you have to wait at all. My family and I continue to eat the eggs and have never had a problem, our friends also still eat the eggs and have never had a problem. We also hatch eggs from the chickens that are being treated and we have never had a problem. Some people say to wait till a chicken has laid 5 eggs before you start eating them again others say to wait over a week. If the eggs are for your own consumption I wouldn't worry to much, the concentration of the ivomectin used for chickens won't damage you or make you ill. You'd have to eat 2 whole bottles of the stuff before you even start to feel any side effects.

If you are staying organic, then there is no difference between icomecing a chicken or giving it a dip. They both aim to have the chemicals absorbed into the chicken's skin to kill the pests that feed on them :)
