Bird lice!!! How do I get rid of it!

With regard to using permethrin as a dip...

How often do you need to do it?

Can you still eat the eggs?

I've just discovered bird lice on my chickens.

...and...

Is is possible that my cats could have them?

They don't mix with the birds, who are totally enclosed.

Here's another question:

To what degree do I need to clean out their hen house? Not that I'm inherently a lazy person, but I did just clean it and replace the pine shavings completely about a week ago, so I'd kind of hate to have to do it all completely again, plus spraying it, but if I must, I must.

Thanks to all for thehelpful advice.

I've purchased some permethrin (17%) to make chicken dip with, and to spray their roosting/nesting areas. I think I'll rake their pine shavings away from those spots and then spray.

Any suggestions about the mix I should make of dip concentrate to water?

I sure appreciate all the support!

Aren't there directions on the label? Use the mix for poultry spray.

Mine is 10% and it is 2/3oz. per gallon of water, with 17% you would use less. .38 oz. per gallon. 2 1/4 teaspoons?

Mine doesn't have a mix for poultry spray. I might try 2 teaspoons per gallon. I did place a call to my local extention agent to see what he suggests, also.

Thank you.

The stuff I bought, at 17% permethrin, also contains piperonyl butoxide technical, which when I looked it up on wiki, is said to make the permethrin effects last longer on the animal. My product is mainly aimed at dogs, according to the label, and says it lasts 30 days. I wonder if, correctly diluted for poultry, it would last that long?
