Bird netting to keep out snakes

:welcome :frow I'm sure you don't want to know this but the snake will keep trying to get at your birds and eggs. Can you call a wildlife rescue to come and get it, better yet if you can trap it? I had a menace owl that killed some of my birds. I accidentally caught it and got it into a cage and a wildlife rescue came and got it. They said they had release areas. Good luck. I have a very powerful fence charge for my electric wires that go around my coops and pens. A couple of snakes tried to go through the fence and were electrocuted. Good luck...

Bird netting is extremely damaging to wildlife. Birds, snakes, and other animals often become tangled and perish in it. If you can, please avoid using it.

Instead I would recommend galvanized metal wire with small holes (square holes).

Half inch hardware cloth works well, just a fence won't really keep out snakes you have to have a roof too. Those suckers can climb, I've seen em go straight up a tree or wall. I have a three strike rule, once in the house eating eggs, relocate across the road. Twice, take to the end of the road. Three times and they die. Unless they kill a chick, then they die the first time. They come and kill 8-9 week old ones and and leave the body cause its too big, even a seven ft long black snake still can't swallow a 8 weekold. Bird netting catches other things than snakes, which can be a problem because then that attracts other predators.

With our local rattlesnakes, they aren’t protected, so they get zero chances. If they’re found in yards around here they are dispatched.

Our local constrictors, mostly leave them alone… relocate if they are catchable, otherwise fix your fencing.

The thin strand/small hole bird netting is bad news. Kills much more bycatch and helpful species.

For topping yards, the 4” square is generally enough to keep birds of prey away.

If topping a small yard, use the heavy gauge plastic netting to keep birds from becoming entangled.

Back to snakes: anything with thin strand (can be deformed enough to allow penetration), or holes bigger than 1/2, if a snake can get to it, they may very well get thru it.

The rat proofing guidelines works for snakes also. But snakes don’t chew, so thick plastic/small hole “can” work, but if you can afford it— rat proof the exterior, and you’ll also be snake proofing. 👍🏻
