My wife and I have begun getting chickens as pets. So far we have gotten Polishes and Silkies, but we like Polishes the best. Our property is somewhat of a resort for the local quail, to which we refer as “our birds” as well. We have had some interesting “close encounters of the bird kind” between the quail and our chickens.

We have two dogs as well. One of our dogs, an American Bull Dog puppy, wants to play with them. The other dog, an Akita, just wants to eat them. We think that our American Bull Dog puppy will be fine with them when he gets a little older and settles down.

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join us here! I hope you are able to help your dogs to get along with your birds. I’m sure if you put some key words in to the search lots of threads will come up on keeping dogs with chickens. The search can be found here ~ https://www.backyardchickens.com/threadloom/search

Good luck and enjoy your time here on BYC :frow

Hi :frow welcome to BYC!! I have a pit bull and used to have a Doberman. The pit bull is female and fine with the chicks the Doberman killed anything that moved. When my chicks matured her favorite chick was a rooster that wound up trying to court her while i wasn't paying attention and now she's really on edge around the chickens. My advice is watch them closely when they hit the hormonal stage to prevent that. She still tolerates them but will not let them close to her anymore, not even the babies. Best of luck :hugs

G’Day from down under Kureci :frow Welcome!

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

Personally, I have found the Topic of the Week articles a great resource and a one stop shop for questions which may have already been discussed within the BYC membership group. One previous discussion is Topic of the Week - Dogs and chickens which you might find interesting or of assistance.

If you would like to share pictures and stories of your flock or dogs, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)

Hi and welcome! Just curious, what traits make you favor Polishes to Silkies? I have 2 Silkies myself, and I'd love to hear about your experience with them! I hope you enjoy being here at BYC! Best wishes!

-Chatty :)
