I am dabbling in a crested naked necked easter egger project just for my own use and enjoyment. I have been calling them Red Neckers. Long story short, a double barred appearing naked necked cockerel chick cropped up in a group of mixed yard eggs I hatched for a friend last spring. He hatched from a blue Legbar egg and looked like a naked necked cream legbar cockerel at hatch (same down color and pattern, not stating he is a naked necked Legbar since he is a mix), so I kept him. Turns out, his sire (a naked necker) was heterozygous for dominant white and hidden beneath the white was barring and the silver gene.

For fun, I mated the little Red Necker rooster that was produced to my old Legbar hens (3 gold and silver crele Legbars and one white) and their first crop of chicks just hatched out. The chicks are autosexing since the rooster is double barred, but some are “regular neckers” since he is only hetero for the naked necked gene. Since my Legbars also carry recessive white, the rooster also picked up a copy of recessive white from his Legbar mother. And the group have produced a recessive white “Red Necker” chick. So fun stuff I think.

Anyway, here is a pic of my Red Necker rooster in with the Legbar hens and the chicks that just hatched. 🐣

The dominant white chicks in the pics are White Leghorns.
