Biscuit the No-Wing Wonder!

it’s now mid august and the girl is doing great!
i was away across the country for all of july so when i came back all of the chicks had grown huge! and now since they’re older, it’s becoming obvious what their personalities are.
Biscuit herself is very non-confrontational and almost antisocial. it’s a little sad to see her being one of the only ones that doesn’t run for mealworms, but i get it. she’ll accidentally cross the older chickens sometimes and when they reprimand her she ends up flailing because she doesn’t have her wings to help her up.
she’s also a little needy! if i place her down and walk somewhere she’ll jump real high and flap her (wings...) to get to me and when i turn around, she’s on her side trying to get up.
thankfully it looks like her sister Dumpling is attached to her. Biscuit does not like to be picked up so she protests when i do, and Dumpling always comes running over to see what’s going on. She always has her eye on me when i’m holding her.
no egg yet, and that’s alright.
with the seasons changing, i’m worried about her ability to keep warm without her wings. during the heatwave all of my chooks had their wings out to cool off, except for her. without wings i’m wondering how she’ll be able to keep the heat in. californian winters aren’t very harsh anyway, but i just want her to be comfortable.
in pictures you can see the different between her and her sister. her sister’s tail is more upright and sleek, but hers is fluffy and wide. assuming that’s just because her wings aren’t there.
hopefully the next update will include eggs. that’ll be an important milestone for her!
Thank you for providing an update!

Marking it down- September 14th!
Went outside to check on the chooks this afternoon, everyone came up to me except a special somebody! i heard scratching coming from the nesting boxes and peeked in- she was sitting there looking back at me. left for an hour and came back at the same time she was leaving the coop!
she has a beautiful brown egg that has light little speckles when run under water. i’m so proud of her because she’s come all this way and now we know there’s nothing wrong with her. she climbed into the nesting box just fine, and came out all her own.
thank you for joining Biscuit on her journey growing up! from a few weeks old to her first egg, she’s come a long way.
i’ll still be posting updates sometimes if something comes up about her, but she’s now a fully grown hen. we are so immensely proud of her and we can’t wait to see how she’s going to amaze us next.

Another update to Biscuit’s fabulously wingless life:
I took her to the park because someone had posted... three roosters were dumped at my local park! I got Biscuit in my car and drove her to the park, and she had a great time digging and scratching for bugs and eating grass. Someone pointed me in the direction of a rooster she’d seen, so Biscuit and I went to check it out. We found a golden laced polish rooster her age hiding out underneath an oleander bush, skittish & afraid. It took I’d say almost an hour of coaxing him go get close to me enough that he’d be within catching range. Well, Biscuit showed him we meant no harm, and she started pecking at some of the grain we placed down. When the rooster came up to peck at it with her, she blocked his view of me, letting me catch him! I couldn’t have done it without her, and I swear by it. I brought them home and she got a big drink of water and some treats, and he’s in a separate run of his own where he can settle down, because he’s very scared. He’s a beautiful boy, we can’t keep him because they’re illegal in our city but we have a rooster rescue nearby that we’re bringing him to... he’s safe- and it’s all thanks to Biscuit!

Oh what a sweetheart Biscuit is!! 💖💕 She has the best home with you!! I saw your thread on the dumped roosters, how kind of you to rescue that handsome boy!! :)

This is one of those stories that just keeps getting better and better. It's a shame you can't keep 'Park'er the rooster. Looks like by the look Biscuit is giving him that she is checking him out!
