Bit by the hatching bug ... Marans hatch

Hi Matt You sound like you have alot of experience. So here's a question for you or anyone else that knows. I just hatched out 8 blue copper marans and 7 of them are grayish blue fluff but one has some red on it. Is this normal? Is it a male and the rest females? Thanks

Hi Cathy,
Blue Coppers should come out blue-grey, as you noted. Reddish is NOT normal! (yet darling, i know!)

Thanks so much Dawn... I'm getting a lot of weird stuff with buying hatching eggs that are "pure breeds" It's fun but a tad frustrating too.

I have 3 wheaton marans pullets that are now laying consistently, I have a question about the eggs.
My whole flock gets to range in my garden eating bugs etc. My old girls egg yolks are dark orange but the pullet eggs have very lite yellow yolks. Since they are all eating the same, shouldn't the pullet yolks also be dark orange?
Thanks
Cathy
