Black Acres: The chickens that saved me

Pics
Chilly here, the horses have done a good job of tramping down the snow in their Paddock, poor chickies are stuck in the barn now way too cold for them outside.
Wow!

Same, it’s a lot of work cleaning up the pine needles. Only to see them all back on the ground a few days later 😒

But thanks! I will!
Yes I know that cleaning up business! I made the mistake of parking my truck under the spruce tree and the snow slides off the limbs taking needles with it, then freeze to my windshield hahaha

But it sure is pretty on the trees

Hey y’all! Sorry I’ve been MIA for a few days. The dreaded covid has had me busy caring for my daughter. She is doing well, but bare with me as I continue nursing her.

Thank you guys for keeping the thread alive in my absence. I love seeing the photos! It’s been cold and dreary here the last few days.
Sorry to hear that, tis the season tho....

Take care, and when you get a chance send more photos of those gorgeous chickies of yours 🤗

Good morning gang, happy Saturday!

Oh gosh that sounds hell-o cold! @Pony. Your upens look pretty toasty and comfortable though, nice spot ♡ and very cute chooks. I'm a sucker for cheeks, what breed?
Sorry to hear about the real reasons you were up. I can relate... it all seemed like such a good idea at the time though, didn't it... 🤪?

Yippee! @TWE. You got your snow!! Looks gorgeous. I always did love the sound dampening effect of snow and how it kind of forces you in the moment. Time to bust out some awesome favorite scarves and hats (and gloves and socks and boots and sweaters...) chapstick... and coco!

Still dark here. 6am and 72° I absolutely love our winters but have become pretty fussy about our summers. Then the heat and humidity is brutal so please forgive me all for wallowing in our perfect conditions for a few moments- in a few short months I will be in hades 😭. Last year, I took me and my chickens up Koke'e to our cabin for the summer and IT WAS FABULOUS. I already made the reservations to go up for my lifetime of summers w/dh lol. I said baby, that's just gunna be my thing and who can blame a girl right? It was like being you guys in the summer. I love that 60-80° optimum temp and so do the chooks.

Chicks had a blast on their summer reprive but by October we missed the fat, low elevation bugs and sounds of the ocean.
For me, Koke'e was much like @blackacres start, an uphill push with DH and scrounge for materials... totally worth it.

A few days ago we had a bright, sunny day so the chooks took full advantage and came out to forage for scratch. The splash up front is one of my new layers. She’s a Marans mix so she’s giving me beautiful dark brown eggs! ❤️

Sammy’s teenager hormones have finally caught up to him and he’s been a bit of a 💩 starter lately. He does well with correction and redirection though and I think he’s absolutely gorgeous.

Gosh, the run looks so warm and sunny I can almost feel it. Such a great job on everything. Flock looks absolutely fabulous.
Hope the boys don't cause too much additional stress 🍗🫕
Hows your daughter today? Rest of family all good? ♡♡♡ My husband never caught from me or anyone else that I know of. I never felt other than mild symptoms. I hope you all fare well.

Sounds perfect I'll be right over 🙂

I’m so glad I’m not the only one who get excited over snow, especially a good snow! It’s not fun for chores but I still love it!
How is your daughter doing? Is she feeling any better? How r you feeling?

I agree snow looks beautiful, and yep for sure miserable for doing chores! My biggest issue is freezing cold fingers!! And my cheeks too...

Lovely!

Yes he is very striking! What wild colouring 🤗

My splash hen lays blue eggs! I find it amazing how they lay different colours, don't you?
