Pullet. My BA are 4 weeks old. The one male still is mostly a fuzzy butt with minimal tail growth. The girls ALL had tails within the first 2 weeks. His comb was prominent and dark by the second or third week.
Nice to know that about the feathering! Mine feathered just a little behind my Dominique and Speckled Sussex pullets. Thanks!

I hope your Black Australorp ends up being sweeter than mine I call El Diablo. He is a handsome devil though, and I do mean devil.
Oh no! Yeah, mine is pretty sweet. He will perch on my lap and happily eat clover leaves out of my hands. But he isn't snuggling up on me or anything yet. But I am still holding out hope.

Sorry to hear that you have a meanie! Australorps are supposed to be so sweet, but you are the second person who told me they got jerks.

I have had several BA roosters over the years and the current one is the only aggressive one that I have encountered. He was temperamental from the start. I have been extremely patient with him and thought having him with 14 older hens would lessen his raging hormones but it has not. He is very good with the hens but that only goes so far with me.

I came because I was worried about my own 4 week old Black Australorp. She/he stands so erect and I kept reading about tail feathers "drooping." This thread has made me go back to thinking she's a pullet. I hope so!
