My friend just texted me a pic of her birds, which she got about 6 weeks ago. She picked out a nice mixed flock from the feed store - some a little older but all less than 2-3 weeks. All supposed to be pullets. I’ve had chickens for over a decade but never have had a black australorp. But! When she sent this pic, I immediately noticed the red red comb and wattles on her BA chick. That chick was on the older side, maybe 2 weeks when she got her, so she would be about 8 weeks now. That comb and wattle look awful red and developed for a pullet of that age, but again, I’ve never had a BA so I thought I would post the pic for you all!

At first glance I seen 2 birds and neither are a BA.

Until I clicked on pic. 🤣 If you needed a 3rd opinion? Yep...that's a boy. 😉

Oops...4th opinion.

Ugh that’s what I thought. Of course it’s the roo that stole this families heart…dang feed store “pullets” 😂
Thanks for all your insight!

Are BAs a difficult breed to sex? I see quite a few gender threads mentioning them. I was going to recommend that this family replace this likely little roo with one that can be feather sexed so this doesn’t happen to them again!

I wouldn't count out a hen yet. If you search through threads you'll find some posts where everyone was confident in it being a roo but it ended up laying an egg. Some astralorp pullets develop huge combs and wattles.
