Black Australorps

I'm not too worried about the broodiness, might be fun. I have 5 different breeds, so hopefully they won't all go broody at once, but if they do oh well. The eggs will be a nice addition, but we aren't going to be dependent on them; in fact we will be bartering most of them out to friends in exchange for things such as taking care of the chickens/house/dogs, etc when we are out of town.

I LOVE Black Australorps! The way the greenish sheen catches the sunlight is so beautiful!

I won grand champion at the state fair as a 4-H kid years ago!

I just got my order of baby chicks in the mail yesterday and I can't wait for my Black Australorps to start laying. I got 11 pullets and 2 roos.

They are on the left side with the 12 foster RIRs

The right side is the bantam special.


After getting my 49 babies beak-dipped in water and started eating, I sat and watched happily for about an hour. There is nothing like watching baby chicks!

Now I am the proud parent of:
11 Black Australorp Pullets
2 Black Australorp Roosters and
24 Assorted Bantams (11 feather-legged and 13 non feather-legged)
(not to mention the 12 Rhode Island Red Pullets I will be fostering)
6 lovely Easter Egger Pullets that are laying nicely
2 tanks full of tropical fish
Smoky, a VERY NEEDY Shepherd mix rescue dog!

LOL, Nope they dont all go broody at once.some are better mothers than others..But sweet birds ..they really are one of best temprament wise... The roosters wont go way out of thier way to get you like some but will be protective like any rooster..It perfectly normal to have the white wing tips after they shed those if they have white feather tips in second year just dont breed those.. some will hang on a little longer than others to those baby feathers, mine usually start laying eggs between 6 and 7 months.
