Black austrolorps good for laying eggs?

Australorps are in my top five favorite breeds. They are very sweet, and the roos are quiet. They are awesome egg layers. one layed 364 eggs in one year. Their broodiness is second only to buff orps.
Also, their eggs are huge and darker than rocks or orps.

I adore my BAs. At first, they were a little stand-offish, but now they are very sweet and curious. Both of mine lay exceptionally well and are the most cold-hardy of my mixed flock. In this cold and snow they are always the first out of the coop and last into the coop.

They are also gorgeous. The pics don't do justice to their coloring, I love the green sheen!

I have yet another question lol,I heard that the BA roos dont crow as much as other breeds of chicken is this true?Or is it based on the specific chicken and not the breed..Thanks

I have no others to compare it too, but my rooster only crows 4 or 5 times in the morning and whenever something is happening. Like people trespassing or coyotes checking out the coop (He tried to attack the coyote through the run wire.

Lucifer, I'm sure you would have won that one.). He crows less than my dog barks, too.

Wow, I got my australorps from an award winning flock here and they lay pale eggs - various shades of pink to pinkish tan. Did I just happen to butcher all the darker egg layers or what?
I love them! They are so laid back and big too - the rooster I kept looks like a turkey.
Check my page for a pic of the egg colors.

My girls are laying lighter eggs (probably about the sa,e colors as you're describing, every now and then I'll get a darker egg) right now than they did in the summer, but, they are just as good

The thing I love best about the australorps is the big round black eye ball, freindly looking. The hens RUN to you to see if you have anything for them. Just a sweet bird , but all roosters , australorps included can be pretty feisty when they have females to attend. One thing Ive noticed is this rooster doesnt have very big spurs just nubs....And they also lay more of a pinkish egg than brown. Excellent egg shell quality , nice show quality but more of a medium sized egg some are large.. Nicely shaped, and in our case LOTS of them..dead middle of january no lights 6 hens up here in our coop produce 4 - 6 eggs a day, on a real cloudy period they might drop down to 3 to 4 eggs but bounce right back to 5 and 6...My husband breeds only top egg layers down at the other barn and I breed toward show birds , some of his get into my program.. If his birds dont produce great eggs, they go to a new home. That was the intention of the origional breeders so he makes that priority. I go for straight combs, big round eye balls ect... but need some improvement , looking for good outcrosses. Once in a while I will go out and find a very pretty light pinkish egg, and think where did that come from? some other breed of bird must have sneeked in here and laid that one.
