How many are there? What are they? I have a black chicken, green sheen, red ears, largish red comb etc, Its not a Austrolorp or a Jersey Giant I don't think. About the size of a Barred Rock. Any ideas?

Hi and welcome!
It would be best to take and post a photo of the bird - and include details like the color of the bottoms of the feet, number of toes, whether legs are clean or not. What type of comb does the bird have - single, rose, walnut, pea, etc?

There are many black breeds of chicken. Wyandottes, Langshans, Cochins, Ameraucanas, and many others come in black.

It can be hard to tell what black chickens are, but we'll try our best.

X4 on that. Trying to ID a bird without a photo is like shooting in the dark. Your description certainly sounds like a Black Australorp. BAs are solid black with a greenish sheen to the feathers (especially in the sunlight), red earlobes, red combs, and about the same size as a Barred Rock.
