Black Cooper Maran??

I would say Cuckoo maran, except it doesnt have feathered shanks and my cuckoo marans have feathered legs. Did the lady have barred rocks? If not, then they are cuckoo marans. On sexing them while it isn't an exact science, if the barring is more defined white lines than it is a Roo, if it is more black with a little white it is pullet.

what color are the legs? in the second pic they look yellow - in the first they could be white.... if they are white I say cuckoo marans (even my hatchery stock have white legs) if they are yellow I say CA grey or barred rock.

If I'm remembering right, cuckoo marans have white legs and barred rocks have yellow. Yours look to have yellow legs (at least the one you're holding up), but maybe they're just slightly lower quality marans. I bought a jersey giant from my pet chicken who is absolutely gorgeous and absolutely big, but isn't quite as big as I'd like her to be and has the wrong color foot-bottoms. Where'd you get your chicks from?

Barred rocks have YELLOW legs. Marans have PINK legs.

I can't tell in the first pic, but the one in the second looks to have yellow. Sorry!

This may be a dumb question, but how can I ever really know? The cuckoo marans look like barred rocks to me. If the legs are yellow it could be poor quality. When they lay eggs they are supposed to be dark brown, but could be anywhere on the brown spectrum right? Am I doomed to be forever in limbo?

I got them from a lady- don't even know her name. Found the ad on craigslist...learned my lesson the hard way. I don't really care what quality they are. I just want them for the dark brown eggs. Not planning to breed or have chicks. Please, o please be maran!!!

IMHO, Poor quality does not excuse the legs being a completely unaccepted color by the breed standard. If they're yellow, they are BR. If they are pink, they are Marans.

And I'm sorry, but it's VERY unlikely that any cuckoos you get from any regular old person will lay the dark eggs you're wanting. The cuckoos are not known for darker eggs, and the 4 that I had at one point laid an egg barely darker than Australorp. If you're bent on having dark eggs, invest in some quality stock from a good breeder

I can't say that it isn't a Cuckoo Marans because I've never had them, but I do have Barred Rocks and Black Copper Marans and I would say that's a Barred Rock Chick. See my chicks below:

Barred Rocks at 4 weeks - note yellow feet and spot on top of head

Black Copper Marans at 2 weeks - note white chest, pink feet and no spot on top of head

Sorry!!

Ok, I just went and looked at the chicks legs. I have 3 that are supposed to be marans. Two of the three have definite pink legs with blackish overtones. The third chicks legs look more yellowish than pink to me, although it also has a lot of dark overtones. So I'm hoping that seals the deal and they are marans!
