Black Copper Maran same as Black Maran?

To further muddy the waters....yes, both black and black copper are recognized varieties......and then you have a "new hybrid" that is marketed as the "midnight majesty marans" which is black plumaged with 'deep browns show up through their down from underneath'...... the latter is showing up quite a bit in retail settings this year and could easily be mislabeled simply as black marans

Black Marans are being sold by Hoover Hatcheries to a lot of feed stores including TSC. I’m not sure if the Black Marans are comparable to Black Copper Marans breed when it comes to standard and egg color darkness.

I have black Copper Marans that I got from reputable breeders for $10 a piece and also got some for $24 a piece from a bigger breeder. I also picked up a few from Meyer Hatcheries for $5 each and I can tell the difference, 2-3 yrs later on how healthy and robust the heritage type vs. the hatchery type since I actually hatching them for few years now.

Please dont confuse recognized black marans with the black feathered marans offered by hoovers.....the latter is a sex linked hybrid (as evidenced by the clearly male barred chick I have in my coop now and the clearly head spotted purposefully ordered male received in a separate order for a customer) not the true breeding recognized variety. My inquiry on receipt of the first chick was dismissed as "sometimes barring just pops up as they are a hybrid, it's not related to gender" ....but when I saw the obvious head spot on the intentionally ordered male and NONE of the female chicks I personally received or saw come in orders for customers were head spotted .....
