Black Copper Marans discussion thread

How good is the Lowell barbour/channing grisham line
They probably are as good as the efforts of their recent breeder/breeders to maximize the good aspects of them ..... now the names you mentioned are breeders in times past . Grisham was a good one .... so was Barbour (but i think he was mostly breeder of welsummers) .

Ok just wondering because some guy on here is selling BCM eggs for hatching and he said that's what line there from...what gets to me though is that he only wants $20 plus shipping for 12+ extras.anywhere else I look they want atleast triple that

You can get eggs from $20-$150 theres a few breeders in Texas that' s where i got mine im in California, those breeders also sale there eggs on eBay good luck .

Ok thank you just trying to make sure I don't waste money on them abd there bout the real deal
Ask to see recent photos of breeder birds from all angles (side, front, back from the bird's level, top photo, closeup of eyes and combs, etc.). Ask to see chick photos, and photos of the eggs for sale next to a Marans egg color chart in the photo. It's the best you can do long distance, and of course you're trusting that they are not using someone else's photos.

Price usually doesn't reflect quality ..... good birds are where we find them . Of course Marans are a work in progress so don't build up your expectations .

As 'Ihilani Coffee' said ask for pics but again the most one can gather from pics is that the bird is (hopefully) the right variety .
The best birds i have purchased in 60 years was $20 birds ..... funny but true .
Although i have recently gotten quality birds from Texas & Florida (products of Bev Davis) . If you are in Texas(or anywhere) let me know and i'll try to help you .

I have some 7 to 8 yr old hens direct from Bev Davis that are still laying good and in very good feathering(definitely their *feed* , water and genetics account for this . Pen size , shape & looks contribute little / they just need a roof overhead , protection from predators , weatherblock if needed , *good shade* , fresh air & sunshine ...... i don't particularly breed for show but do want my birds balanced / structurally & mentally sound ( i try to breed for the darker egg) .
I don't sell birds but i would almost give a few of these hens to a responsible person if picked up here or nearby(south Alabama) . (would cost to ship)

PS : i need to add something i think very important (that is) i try to never over crowd birds (it's always produces big problems) .
