Black Copper Marans discussion thread

I have decided Marans are impossible to breed. I think birds that fit within SOP in every way are very rare and ones that reproduce their selves are only in fairy tales. Obviously I am inexperienced and impatient lol but I would bet a lot of you have come to the same conclusion.
I have also decided that I will no longer worry about getting "perfect" birds. I just want the darkest layers I can find because focusing on one breed trait is about all my pea brain can handle.

That being said, what lines lay the absolute darkest eggs. Feel free to promote yourselves! I know many of you focus on dark eggs mostly.

As a side note, I don't sell very many chickens and Marans will only be a small part of my chicken flock. I just want pretty egg baskets and will sell/give extra chicks to my friends as dark egg layers, not Marans, since they may or may not be true to breed type and I don't want to pollute the Marans gene pool with my proposed unbalanced birds. There is already enough of that going around with people selling $10 'Marans' chicks that came from a 3 or 4 egg.

has anyone crossed a marn roo with a barred hen? I received a beautiful roo by accident last year and would like to hatch my own chicks with him. wondering what the chicks may look like

I do have EE Hens... so i should try crossing them with the BCM? and get olive ee's?
Yes, that's a very popular cross, and a pretty egg for the basket

I feel your pain. I think you just HAVE TO hatch out about 200 chicks in the spring, and then you will have enough to choose from.

I have them in the same set up as I have raised all my babies for years. I've tried reducing the numbers so they're less crowded. They have plenty of food and water. Nothing makes them happy. No wounds on anyone but so cranky with each other! Guess I just have angry babies. Oh well.
