Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Looks like cuckoo to me which pops up on occasion in all the US lines I have owned to date. Never seen an extra toe though

I would recommend going back to the person you got the eggs from and see if this Blue chick could be mixed with another breed.

Well here's the deal:

I ordered
3 BCM (dark brown eggs) and
3 Olive Eggers (hatched out of blue eggs).
She threw in an extra one of each for good measure.

- The BCMs = pure Little Peddler
- The OEs = Welsummer Rooster over any of her following hens (Cream Easter Egger / Blue Ameraucana / Splash Ameraucana)

Out of the 8 eggs we ended up with:
  • 3 identical black chicks-BCMs.
  • 3 identical dark brown chicks that had to be the OEs.
  • 2 odd balls (one that looks just like a chipmunk and the blue chick.)

I always assumed the chipmunk was the OE and came out of the last blue egg and the blue chick was the BCM (due to the feathered feet) and came out of the brown egg.

Now I'm wondering if the blue chick is actually an olive egger (welsummer/ blue ameraucana mix) and the chipmunk came out of the last brown egg and is actually a pure welsummer. She could have accidentally put a welsummer egg in the mix instead of a BCM egg as they look alike and I know that she was selling pure welsummers as well.

Here is a pic of the two oddballs.

What do we think-- could the blue chick be a welsummer/ blue ameraucana cross? Thanks for your help!

(and do these look like girls?)

Hi, newbie here. My husband and I are just setting up a coop. He's French and I've lived in France a few times and when I was researching breeds I remembered that I like the taste of French eggs better than I like American eggs. I know a lot of it can be because of what the hens eat, but because some people do seem to feel that BCM eggs taste better, and because of the sheer coolness of having French hens, I've kind of got my heart set on Black Copper Marans.

Trouble is, they're (as I gather) hard to find at the best of times, and being that this is not really the season for baby chicks, they're even harder to find now.

Does anyone have any leads on breeders in the northern half of California who offer sexed chicks? I'm just looking for three. I'd be willing to drive a 3-4 hour radius around the bay area.

I should add that next week I'll be driving from Denver CO to Salina KS to visit family and could also theoretically pick up chicks anywhere in between, assuming it's possible to take them home with me on an airplane.

I'm also willing to wait a while.

Here's what I've tried:
I left a message for Deb's Birds, mentioned on one of the threads here, haven't heard back yet but it's only been a day or so
I looked at the Marans Breeder's association and looked up the local breeders but none of them were really turning anything up as far as a website or contact info
I've called all my local feed stores. A few get in cuckoo marans occasionally, but none ever get BCMs
I've looked at Craigslist. There are a few possibilities there but I don't know how to tell what's good and what's not.
I've called mypetchicken.com. They don't have any now but said they don't know from week to week what they might get so advised me to check back every week just in case.

Any suggestions you guys have would be most welcome. Thanks!

Plenty of breeders in the northern area, not very many offer sexed chicks to my knowledge. You are right about the time of year in regards to that too. Pullets might be a better option at this point, or wating til spring. Alchemist Farms, CR Poultry, Rare Feathers Ranch (RFR of CA just a few posts above), Unionhill ranch are all ones ive reasearched, dealt with, or hope to deal with in the very near future. All have some wonderful looking Marans.

Good luck to you! And welcome to the boards.

Sunbird Farms in Central Calif (Visalia) has Bresse and Barbezieux (French breeds) and non-French like Sulmtaler, Niederrheiner, and Isbar. Sunbird seems to specialize in meat birds that also are good layers but you'd have to ask about Marans. If you decide on either the Bresse or Barbezieux French breeds you can contact them or look over their website and call to see what other breeds they have - I suspect they don't list all their breeds as the website removes/adds breeds from time to time. http://sunbirdfarms.com/about/

I have dealt with RFR of CA personally with another breed I bought and can recommend this breeder.

I actually have a BCM from Christine at RFR. Also have a BLRW and lavender ameraucana. Nothing but good things to say. I know she also has LP lines, and the new greenfire imports in the works.
