Black Copper Marans discussion thread

SO are marans eggs "usually" speckled or will those spots go away and the color will smooth out? also this being her first egg...will her eggs darken a bit or should i expect this color later on as well?

Speckles or not, and how many, is an individual hen thing... It changes a bit over the season, but not lots. Mostly, as the egg lightens over the season, if your hen makes spots, the spots become more visible.

I can't remember now if I have ever gotten a very light egg in the beginning, and the pullet then laid darker eggs. In general they start very dark and hopefully, with good breeding, lighten up gradually and slowly over the season.

Each chicken is different but often if a hen lays a speckled egg she will almost always lay a speckled egg to some degree. I have some Marans that lay speckled eggs and others lay solid color. And the first eggs laid are typically as dark as they will be and will eventually lighten a little toward the end of her laying cycle each year. After her winter break and she starts up again her eggs will start out dark and again lighten during her cycle.

perfect thanks! almost like her ink runs out ;) too funny.

My photos just are NOT that wonderfully artistic, also, I can't figure out how to photograph Marans eggs.. They always look WAY lighter in the photo than they are in real life.

they are all so beautiful! i hope mine shows up a bit darker :( i feel like on the color scale hers is a 4 maybe a 5??

My eggs run in 6 to 7... But I have one hen that runs a 5, maybe 4 at the very end of the season.

My new crop of pullets should have better and more consistent color... I can't wait for them to lay! :drool
