Don, would this be shafting? Of the males, he's the only one that has the copper straight down the shaft. The others have copper feathers on their breastSC, If you have more of the males go ahead and post .
Quote: Yes, the first male has what would be called shafting. The other male has only some copper spots and could be used as a breeder if need be. Might change after they grow up.
Ok, thanks Don. At least now I know what to watch for. All I can do now is grow them out and hope for the best. Oh, by the way, that rooster that was mossy still has that mossiness on his wingsYes, the first male has what would be called shafting. The other male has only some copper spots and could be used as a breeder if need be. Might change after they grow up.

Could you post a close up picture of the original Mossy Male.
What are some early culls I should look for in my cockerels? My group is around 12-16 weeks old now. I know I have one boy that has more straw colored hackles so I won't be keeping him (I like the dark mahogany color better) but I need to know what else to look for. None of the boys have an over abundance of copper on them. If anything, a lot are too dark but I know I need to wait a couple more weeks to judge on that one.
The pullets, I will be waiting until they're full grown to judge their body type and egg color before I let any of them go. I only have like 4-5 pullets but about 12 cockerels to choose from.
Don, if you take pictures of your birds (I know you have so many) would you take some pictures of some young BCMs of yours that you like and that show promise?I think you pretty well covered what you are looking for. I would start looking at size and over all Marans type at this age. We moved 23- 7 week old males out side today and we have a lot of real Dark ones. Some will be Black for sure. If you have time post a few pictures of the males.

I am waiting a few days for them to get used to the lot and tomorrow will move the balance of the males out if these survive. In the males we moved today I see a couple that look real good and most appear to have good size. The first 150 will be eight weeks the 27th.
