Black Copper Marans discussion thread

RB, I have to disagree with LP on inbreeding. What you want to do is linebreeding. I never inbreed any of the fowl I have ever owned. If you go by the old Cliche you will never improve your Marans to close to the SOP . While working on just one thing at a time you will have three faults show up. Work on as many faults at the same time that you can. I recommend to all new Poultry people to not be afraid to Single and Double mate your fowl. You can accomplish more in a shorter amount of time. You need a lot less brood fowl.
I wasn't advocating inbreeding. I know there is no surer way to unearth all the flaws and lock them in forever than inbreeding. I plan on line breeding. I was trying to point out how overwhelming it is to try to breed perfect BCMs with 9 color eggs. I guess what I am trying to say is we have to crawl before we can learn to walk let alone run. I always appreciate the feedback here.

SC, start off with the sibling matings and breed them single mated to get a few with marks  and you can breed them several different ways. After that father to daughter, mother to son,  there are a multitude of different ways to breed and not breed brother-sister.
Here where I live we do not breed Pullets until they have been through a Winter. We have to see if they can withstand the cold.
So single mate to see who is throwing what, then move forward from there?

SC, With Single mating you can take all the female youngsters and make a breed yard with them and put one selected male over the group because all the female will be sisters. You can find who is throwing junk real fast when you single mate. With the BC Marans I would recommend Double mating.

RB, I think that eventually if the APA picks up the Egg show, you will see people breeding for Egg shows and people breeding for SOP Marans.

The BC Marans is most likely the hardest Variety to breed to a standard.

SC, does this male still have all the colored feathers. If you can try and keep an eye on him to see what he looks like after the Juve molt. I know the white specks will most likely disappear.
He is the one in the closer up view of the two I said were possible culls. The one with the widely spaced comb. I'll get more pictures of the boys this weekend

My plan was to cull to one rooster and move forward from there. Do you recommend the two best?

I have eggs ranging around 4 - 6 from the BCMs I put in my laying flock and my egg people are amazed, they are dark enough for them. I love dark eggs but I really want to breed for SOP.
