Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Don, These are not good pictures but the best I could get! The sun was going down and the wind was blowing. I am liking the Blue copper that is getting some nice copper. What do you think so far?

Yes, the Blue Copper male looks good at this point, looks as though you will have some blue also, these are out of the eggs from Julie right. My best suggestion is give them all the time you can before doing any culling.

Kevin and myself are getting ready to cull some young males here this week and send them to processor saturday , Out of the first 150 we might be able to keep maybe 5-6 males and will keep a couple with extra brown on the breast.

I ordered chicks from Julie. They are from Blue Copper Rooster over Black Copper hens. So you think they are Blues? I wonder if blues got mixed in! How old are the ones you are culling?

The males we are culling are from 8-12 weeks, I do not think the blues you have will color up. When we buy from the egg and chick peddlers we have no way of knowing how they were bred. We think we all know that it is easier to breed a good female with color.

Do you think they are Blue Coppers without copper or Blues? Is there any way of telling? Only a couple of my Black Copper pullets are showing copper so far.

Hi- I've asked for feedback on my BCM too before but it got passed over. He is now the only boy of a mixed flock (aggressive Bielefelder culled yesterday), including two BCM hens... I'm just curious how he measures up. He is 4 months old. Thank you in advance!

Run mine @ 55% until day 18 then jack it up to 70% until hatch finishes....

I run mine between 25-35% in the cabinet for incubation then 65% lockdown in the hatcher. Always have excellent hatches no matter what breed. I had to cater to what works for the turkey poults best and it seems to work for everything.

any idea why his comb is floppy?

this is marko

he has been sick, I do hope his comb will return to normal. besides his comb his 4th toe is too short. he might be good for crosses. his mother is a very prolific layer so I want to keep him. he should pass that to his daughters.
