Black Copper Marans discussion thread

I have some very young FBCMS, no pics right now. I have what looks to be a male who is still solid black with a green sheen and Big red comb that's about 8-9 weeks old. I have some others that are about 6 weeks old that are black with rust color around the neck. Does the all black one seem weird coloring? Does the rust color speak as to the others being makes or female? I'm confused on the different coloring as I have 4 total and thought I might have 3 Roos and a pullet. Thanks! I'll try to get some pics up tomorrow. I just don't see a lot posted on coloring in that age range.

One of my 12wk cockerels is all-black, green/purple sheen and is just starting to get a few copper-colored hackle feathers in. He's clearly the dominant roo with the largest, reddest comb. The other 4 cockerels have much smaller, barely pink combs. I think it a lot depends on the individual.

they are still young. both males and females have copper colour on their necks.watch their combs and wattles, males have much bigger and red comb and wattles at that age.females have small pink/black combs and almost no wattles (small pale pink ones).

Hello Just found this thread and have been reading though it. I just recently bought 6 french BC, 6 French Wheaten( one might be a cockerel) and 6 Cuckoo Marans. Also one BC Cockerel. This is my first time with Marans so I'm hoping to have some good ones. Not really into showing but still would like to have some nicely breed chickens. As soon as I get picture I can post them. They are all about 3 weeks right now. Sold to me as french and they all have feathered legs. All have slate colored legs as far as I can see right now. I also have five BC eggs in an incubator on lock down. I'm learning a lot about the Marans I did not know before.

I have some that are 5 weeks old. I am pretty sure they are fairly good quality.

There seems to be a fair distinction between what will be male and female. A larger comb and a fair bit redder. We have 7 in that category and 5 in the small comb and little color category. I have one which has a somewhat bigger comb but not the same redness.

Do I have 7 boys and 5 girls and one that is yet to be determined or is it still fairly up in the air?

Don't say that! The last one looks like the rest of the "girls" so then they will all be boys. :)

sorry, looks like boys
