Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Look at those feet!

If you have some female with little or no feathers on their feet you could use one of these males over them to help get more feathering. If the middle toe didn't have feathers these are what I would like. It is a delicate balance trying to breed what the SOP calls. I primarily breed what I like myself.

They look real nice at this time, the hackle looks to be coming in real good also. How is the breast color ? The next couple of week they will mature a lot more. I like what I can see.

That I have noticed! One of the Black Coppers has color coming in on the breast. Two Black Copper that I have been keeping an eye on are looking pretty good on breast and I liked the size but one has a wave in his comb. I don't know if that will get better with age. I have one that I am culling because he is small in size. I will try late this evening to get som pictures of the breast color. The Blue Copper looks good so far!

Top two pictures are of the wavy comb bird. Is that a DQ?

Is this a DQ? Feather on middle toe. The wavy comb bird does not have this but have noticed it on the Black Copper roosters. I have not seen this on any of my Blue copper roosters.

#90 has color coming in on breast!

#76 top 2 pictures! Sorry for being so picture heavy! These are the three Black coppers that I managed to get pictures.

I would not worry about a single feather on the middle toe, very easy to get rid of the feather, just pull it out with pliers. This last male appears to have what I call a Bulging breast and would be a cull and the little brown on breast would be ok to breed for Colored pullets.

Could you take a picture of the comb with you holding male in your hands to get a close up.

Don, Out of the three birds above! Picture 4 and 5 are the same bird #90! Maybe a keeper? Only 2 of my Black Copper pullets are showing color and two are not! My two blue copper pullets have no copper showing. I will probably do a blue/black pen at this point. I am thinking next year of doing a solid black pen. Getting chicks from different source.
