Black Copper Marans discussion thread

The time has come to make a final decision here on which boy will stay to breed forward and which will heading to freezer camp. I'd like all of your opinions on these boys. Please make sure you read the pros and cons that I've noted about them also. @snowbird, I'd definitely like to hear your thoughts and opinions.

Boy #1

Pros: very friendly/docile, decent comb
Cons: a bit scrawny, full brother to a couple of the pullets

Boy #2

He does not have a wry tail though it looks like it in the one picture. It's just the way he was standing. He is half brother to boy #1

Pros: nice body type, good tail angle
Cons: too dark, too many points on comb, something weird going on with the blade though not quite a side sprig, mother did not lay a dark egg (though hatched from a very dark one), full brother to a couple of the pullets

Boy #3

Pros: good body type, nice copper on hackles and saddle, totally unrelated to the pullets
Cons: high tail angle, coronation comb

Here are some of the pullets I'll be working with. Most of them have very little copper if any. I did have one that had nice copper hackles but unfortunately i lost her the other day. Some of them are standing awkwardly in the pictures but all of them have the green sheen to their feathers.

I have 2 for sure fbcm that I'm 100% sure one is roo and 99% sure other one is too. I also have another fbcm that I think is a pullet but I can't tell if she is a pure or one of the ones I crossed to make olive eggers. They are 7 weeks.

Roo#1 nice copper coming in on neck, back and wings.

What I'm 99% sure is roo #2 based on comb and waddles. But is about half the size of first roo and no color coming in yet.

What I think is a pullet but not sure if pure fbcm. She isn't built like the boys but wasn't sure if that's a boy vs girl thing. She also feathered in way faster. She's more round. The boys are really long legged and lean. They also have huge shank feathers and hers are way smaller.

I can not say anything that you would like to hear. The third male with the sprig is the only male with good Copper showing. The first two are way too dark and are Mahogany colored and used with your females would only produce Culls. You could in an emergency use the #3 male for one year.

I knew the prognosis wasn't good but that's what I was thinking of doing. I wanted to double check and see what you had to say. As of now, the plan is to use #3 to breed, raise up some of his sons and keep the best from them before sending him off to the freezer also. Maybe do it again with his sons if need be. Thank you.
