Black Copper Marans discussion thread

I can not say anything that you would like to hear. The third male with the sprig is the only male with good Copper showing. The first two are way too dark and are Mahogany colored and used with your females would only produce Culls. You could in an emergency use the #3 male for one year.

I have three 5 month old cockerels left. I rehomed my best cockerel last week. He didn't have a tail for a long time and when he did get one it was wry. It was pretty discouraging! Here are some pics of the three I have left. I have another 12 a couple of months younger but I want to just deal with these. Trying to decide which one if any to keep. Jump right in Snowbird, do your worst, I can take it. These aren't good pictures, they have discovered the hens and are in that crazy teenage mode.

Hi RedBank.

your best cockerels are the one in the first photo standing on one leg. and the one in the last photos.

both have a great balance between the Black and the copper. nice tail good form /shape and angle. leg color good not too dark.

Avoid the one in the second photos too black .high tail. dark shanks.dark ears tuft. Too much black.

the last one is my favorite.great type. need a good photo of him.

Always watch the color of the ears tuft of the roosters ,has to be a coppery color same as the hackle. if there is a difference between this 2 ( ears tuft and the hackle ) than a pullets progeny will be without hackles .

Rooster with a spotted chest and coppery ears tuft = pullets with nice hackles and well balanced pattern.

I ll never use a Black/Blue copper Roosters without a spotted chest and dark ears tuft .

Thank you Chooks man I was hoping you would weigh in. I will work on better pics and keep your advice in mind.

Funny thing happened, my BCM chick was hatched with clean legged chicks, she saw the feathers on her legs and was pulling on them and not letting go, but complaining at the same time, like... " What is this? this isn't mine!"
