Black Copper Marans discussion thread

What I would do is to look at each and evaluate with no consideration to color. Eliminate birds with obvious faults like comb spurs, etc. Then I would take top three or four and see how they go through molt. A lot can change through those first couple molts. And, stuff can happen to kill a bird, so good to have backups.
The yellow skin as far as i understand is recessive. So each parent has to be a carrier and they themselves look normal. Those yellow legs could have happened last year or decades ago. Full sibling matings allow you to test for recessive genes lurking in the genetics.

Actually bought them in Deere Park 6+ hr round trip drive. Proto call on this thread no name calling . That's why I posted BUYER BEWARE. The chics looked real healthy. Cock had real nice color. Hen black no copper. Did not see the eggs they hatched from. Read the 1200 pages post. Still is a lot too learn. I'm convinced there are a lot of people who honestly believe they have French Black Copper Marans and you are not going to tell them differently. I love the challenge. The wife and I are all ways up for another drive. Besides, I really like to eat CHICKEN

Yes, I agree, most are unfamiliar with SOP and think they have good birds. Even starting out with 'real', if unfamiliar with SOP a few generations later can be a mess.
I like a challenge, too, so ordered 15 pullets from Meyer Hatchery. Plan was to get at least one, maybe two good hens to start working with and pick up a good known line rooster this fall.
Well, out of 13 that are now 9 weeks olds? 10 are black, and clean legged, the other 3 are the prettiest cuckoo and also clean legged with yellow skin. I just have to laugh. They will most likely lay a brown egg and are NOT ever go into my breeding pens. Sweet birds and I can tell by person

ality they do have Marans in them.

With help from Bev Davis I located Julie Akers and got peeps from her. Ended up with 3 Blue Copper and 11Black Copper now growing well. They are straight run so will have some roosters.

Years ago I had Cottage Hill line and let them get away from me. Didn't know what I had or how hard it was to get that quality. Older and wiser.

Don has suggested a man, Brian Parks from Oregon. Have not been able to contact him yet. Supposed to be Frasier Park Farms. Website not up?? E-mail not answered. There are several that are from Oregon and Wash. Waiting to find shows, looks like it will be this fall.

Have you joined APA and gotten your yearbook? The way it is set up you have to do some real sleuthing to figure out who has what breeds. The results on poultry shows can help, too.

I accessed the NPIP list state by state and the code list by number and breed, then began searching. Also, joined breed club. It would be so very, very, nice if APA would list contact info and breeds raised! I am spoiled by American Dairy Goat Association listing info for quickly finding quality animals.

NPIP breed code for Marans R213; Black Copper R716; Blue Copper R1001

Run mine @ 55% until day 18 then jack it up to 70% until hatch finishes....

Wow! That's high compared to what we've been doing... But, then again, we had zero hatch (and a 106 spike) last time. What's been your rate with that level? My two hatches beforehand were about 50% for shipped eggs, so, not terrible. The last batch was sad.
