Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Well we've got our BCM separated from the girls now. He just got to aggressive:/ He nearly killed 2 of the girls within past couple of days.
Wish us luck please.

I am sorry to hear your BCM rooster is terrorizing your hens. How many hens do you have? What did he do to them?

Hi...I'm new here and think I posted a question on the wrong thread as noone has responded to it...

Question:

I just bought a pair of Blue Copper Marans and was going to use them for breeding, raising and selling...From what I understand, if this pair gives me any wheaton marans, I need to find a new pair as they have a bad gene pool?

thank you. Especially since he's been such a great roo. 15 pullets. Pecking eyes & combs till they bleed horribly. Hubby caught him holding down buff Orpington head till she couldn't move. He almost culled him yesterday. 21 wks old. We're giving him another chance.

Sometimes they just don't like young birds they don't like this baby sound they make. Put him in with some old hens and they will put him in his place

thank you. They are all 21 weeks, youngest ones are 18wks & no one likes them so they r still separate:/ (3 of the 4 are good in the run with big ones, but not good in confined space together & the odd one hides in the coop while everyone else is out in the run)

When we buy adult Marans or even chicks we have no way of knowing has been bred into them.. Most people are talking about BC Marans when they talk about culling for the Wheaten influence. There is no way to tell if these have Blue Wheaten mixed in though. Just hatch some and see what happens.

Thx Don...do I want to cull the parents if I get wheaton babies tho?

Cull as in don't breed/sell and label them as pure BBS Marans, I have yet to research about purifying a line after it has been "exposed" to another color variety.

If you breed the siblings and have some Wheaton traits show up you can just make it known that they are not pure BBS Marans.

I still breed quite a few "layer/pet type" chicks when there is extra space to be used.

Where did you get your birds?

If they are from a well known bloodline or breeder you have a lot less of a chance at having mixed colors in their genetics, especially if the person you bought them from only keeps BBS Marans and no other colors of Marans

im not sure who the breeder is as I got them from a sale...they had 3 rooster/hen sets Blue Copper Marans and 1 rooster/hen set of Blue Laced Barnevelders...So basically, I need to hatch out some eggs in the future, if any wheaton shows up...they r not pure...

they did have 10 chicks there that were 6 blue, 3 black, and 1 wheaton Maran...

Is there a ratio to watch for? Because will u NEVER get a wheaton at some point?
