Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Help! I thought I was hatching out all BCM chicks from my trio of BCM but really unsure what I have. There's two all black pullets and one BCM cockerel, 1 very red cockeral with yellow! Feet and no feathers, 1 reddish pullet?, the only 1 I am not sure if sex and 1 golden and 1 other color pullets. 7 total. Only the 1 red cockerel doesn't have any feathery feet and some are very hard to see, the lighter colors. Any idea? I am not a breeder, just want darker eggs.

These are suppose to be 2 out of 3 the parents to the above young pullets and cockerals. The two hens look just alike and are sisters.

This is the two lighter pullets, I hope! One looks more like an easter egger and I can't tell if it is another cockeral :( I didn't place any green eggs!

another shot of the one in question. Also, what is the pretty golden pullet? She does have fairly good feathery feet

If that middle pic is the parents: The rooster looks quite a bit like a welsummer. These may be mixed marans or who knows what, could even be EE x marans that were re bred back to marans, that would explain the dark eggs.

Your male is BCM and Welsummer cross... 1 or both hens could be as well... that explains the pullets coloring and the red cockerel with yellow feet... some Welsummer lines have very dark eggs, some are even darker than a lot of 'BCM' lines I have seen...

The Hens & Rooler are not related. But note thinking back, the Hens had a brother that had yellow feet, I thought he was killed but wonder if one of those eggs was fertile by him and not the Rooler. We were not happy with him to begin with so nature culled for us and we got Rooler who is suppose to be from a BCM breeder in Denver.

Very welcome... and I gotta :gig
First time anyone has ever thanked me for explaining that a purebred is actually a cross... :D

Well... something is going on with the hens line as well then... they should all have white skin, no yellow... as their brother showed yellow skin, then it is likely at least one or both are carriers of it as well... yellow skin is recessive... actually, at least 1 hen carries it... that absolutely explains why the red cockerel has yellow skin/shanks... and Rooler is a carrier and the red's sire I don't doubt, since the color most likely comes from him being Welsummer cross...
