Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Cockerel #3 appears to me to have white areas at the bottom of both earlobes, though there could be strong light reflections. Having hatched a few like that myself from "top breeder" eggs, I know it when I see it. It looks like someone smudged zinc oxide or white paint. Unmistakeable. Only MathAce knows if their rooster has actual white lobes. Enough info has been posted about it for them to know what to do. My best guess is that white earlobes and scrawny birds are indicative of Penedesenca crossing to improve egg color or introduce other color genes for new varieties.

Okay I can't see any white on the ear lobs....is it where it looks shiney? Everytime i find something new on here I have to run out and check my birds to make sure they are okay! ha!

I still say it's a reflected light. I know when I take pics, some feathers will look white in the pics.

Makes me go run out to the pen to re-check what I just saw in the pictures, and luckily, it's the light. Best to take pics on a cloudy day without a flash.

Whenever I am photographing baby animals (or birds), often fur/feather/scales on those newborns is so fine, often reflecting light back because color has not fully come in yet (melanin) until they get older.

I am currently in the process of "shopping" for some Marans and am looking for info on who to buy some top quality French Black Copper Marans hatching eggs from here on BYC. Any input on who and why you suggest that person would be greatly appreciated as I do not have any history with this breed and don't want to make a mistake and get mixed breed birds.
(I would need them shipped to souhtern Fl.)
