Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Tumeric (the spice) is an anticocciadiastat. It won't cure an outbreak but it does prevent outbreaks.. One can mix it in feed in thier existing program.

Not to interrupt the Cocci discussion but....

I'm posting because my first Black Copper Maran chick just hatched today. We were expecting them to hatch in about 5 days, but I heard peeping from the henhouse today, and when I had a chance to look when the hen left the nest, this is what I saw!

. (There are more photos on my blog).

This little guy is now moved into a brooder indoors -- this week it looks like we'll be dealing with a staggered hatch.

H and H poultry . . . . I got some chicks from them not too long ago. It seemed like April did most of the office / phone / email work.
Her and her husband work the chickens together. .. . . I would assume that this is going to be a VERY VERY VERY busy time of the year for them.

Don't give up on them if that is who Bev recommended.

I am getting caught up on the postings. . . . If someone hasn't sent you some names, I'll try to give you a few leads.
I need to know what state you are in first!

BRAVO - - -

I have had a rough learning curve in my first year of chicken husbandry. ...
But have been lucky enough to escape the dreaded Cocci. . ..

I am so glad you posted your trauma.

I have learned a lot through your situation, as unpleasant as it was.

SJensen, DARLING chick!

Also love Sherman and his ladies.

Glad to hear the cocci discussion. I'm hoping I never have to deal with it, but I'm mentally filing away the info.

Thanks Math. I take lots of preventative measures...well at least I thought I did. If I hatch more than 15 chicks I separate themi to 2 brooders so I can watch them and their progress. If one isn't eating I know it and if one comes down with something I can isolate it without exposing too many. In this case it was both brooders that got it. I must have spread it thru contact before I knew for sure what the first one had. As of tonight, everyone seems good. Some are a little tired looking but those are with the worlds greatest broody hen who won't rest until their crops are so full it looks as if they've swallowed golf balls

No more bloody poo so it looks like they are on the road to recovery.

Medicated chick starter from here on out...even if I have to drive way out of my way to get it:)

Thnks for all of the help and support guys! I really appreciate it! You guys are the best!

Here is today's hatchling -- hatched on day 17 (?!) We brought the little guy into a brooder tonight since it looks like we'll have a staggered hatch. I think the breeder might have gotten a couple of eggs from under a broody hen or something.... Anyhow he seems fine.

Well the comb and Wattles... not so good... the amount of copper looks real nice for creating good stock.., I would watch the combs as you breed forward and cull for that point... If you have darker hens he looks like a good fella to use... also the lighter hackle color can be improve with this fella... Can't wait to see what he produces.. He looks like a keeper for the breeding pen.
