Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Pinkish/white feet pads (nearly my flesh color)

Eyes changing color by the day- currently coppery (same color as the feather almost exactly) originally greyish-green.

Ok, he's runty... and still has no amount of tail ... and no saddle- I wonder if he's split front to back gynomorph ??? he really has a hen tail...

Oh, he isn't crowing yet either, I swear I got him at the Jan 2nd chicken stock in Lake City...

(remember there is a much larger roo in there with him)

How odd, if you look back at the other picts he really does have a hen-tail...

Math - I agree - he definitely has the look and stance of a hard-feathered game type.

I had a Bresse cockerel that I swore was a hen - you couldn't tell because they are pure white, but a couple weeks ago I noticed some saddle feathers. His hatchmate is full on huge combed rooster at 4 months, while this strange "capon" has hen sized comb/wattles and a very horizontal hen-like stance. And it's a total wimp, and acts like a hen. I think something is wrong with its hormone levels - got it in a meat pen, and going to check out the "beans" later at slaughter to see if they're normal. Bresse are supposed to be laying at 16 weeks, so this one is defintely an anomaly. Not a trace of roo-ness in sight, just the saddle feathers and craaazy long roo legs.

GOOD! This is SOP. The picture made them look yellowish which would be bad.

GOOD! The pumpkin orange copper color is SOP

The hen-tail carriage may be the result of him submitting to the much larger alpha roo. You would hide your sex too under the same conditions

The BCM roos should have a SHORT tail any ways. . . If he was in an environment where he was the only male, you may see him carry the tail higher

NOT CROWING is a wonderful thing. My 3 1/2 month cockerels just started crowing in the last couple of weeks. . . . so around 3 months. The stupid chick in the house has been crowing since 2 1/2 WEEEKS! Yours may not do a lot of crowing with alpha roo breathing now his neck. He may have to wait until he gets a little bigger before he starts telling the world how manly he is

His size or "runtness" does not bother me so much as the shape of his chest. He should be filling in a lot over the next two months. It will be interesting to see how the chest forms over the next month or two. . . . Keep us updated. You picked him up in January . . . so he has to be at least 4 months old. Did you take any pics when you first brought him home ? ?

Thanks VC! I get real nervous if I see something odd like that and no one has commented on it. . . .
I am not that confident on my owm powers of observation and surely don't want to tell somebody something that is off base.

FireTigeris . ... . .LOOK carefully. Does he had no saddle feathers or does he not have a copper colored saddle?
He looks to be dark and might be growing in a black saddle ( or mostly black).
