Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Yes, I do like the Davis birds for size - size does seem to be lacking in many Marans lines. However, this guy has NO Davis blood to my knowledge...I need to check on that, he's not from my line. I'll report back what his lineage is, but I believe he is MOSTLY W. Jeane.

K, just for clarification, that cockerel of mine is mostly W. Jean, with a smattering of Presley.

Sounds good to me as that is what I believe I have also. But since I have hatch off close to 2000 of them now I might should just say they are hillbilly bred Marans.

I don't want to open up a can of worms by saying this, as I know many on here do not care what lines their Marans are from - of course, that's perfectly fine! But to me, knowing the originating lines helps to make some breed decisions. My line is still my line...but I have to give credit where credit is due. There are MANY who have done much, much, MUCH more for this breed than I have. At the end of the day, most of us have hillbilly-bred Marans! I like it that way. I never make decisions based solely on bloodline.

WORD!!!!!!!!!! Very well put Wynette! I agree 100%.

Many THANKS to those who first pioneered the way with Marans and the wonderful job of breeding that they have done and acheived, without them we would not be here enjoying our Marans today, regardless of whose line they came from. I enjoy them all no matter where they came from.

Wynette, if I thought it would help with what I am trying to do I would breed all my hens to a Turkey. I had other lines but culled them for things I didn't like and did not want to work to correct things. I would bring some new Marans in a heart beat if I thought they were worth working with them. I will not use a BC male from lines that produce the white tail and wing feathers or white under color in hackle anything else is fair game.

There is no one I would like to give credit for the Marans because I have been culling 90 % or more of what I have raised to get to where I am now.

Key board going faster than I can think.

I know this has been discussed before but what I found did not quite cover the question.......... Multiple white/light grey feathers in the lower part and on the outer toe of both the legs. 6 month old roo, quite nice in most other areas, certainly no other DQ's. Can get pics if that would help or maybe there is no question....... Breed or Cull?
